Creating Healthier, Resilient Communities, 1 Bin at a Time
Our Story & Mission
From One Truck to New England's Leader
In 2011, Conor Miller started Black Earth Compost with a single truck in Gloucester, MA. His radical idea was simple yet revolutionary: food scraps are a resource, not waste. Black Earth has steadily grown to become the leading full service compost company in New England, with over 40 trucks and 4 compost facilities. The vertically integrated company composts the material too, transforming it into a valuable agricultural resource, closing the loop on food waste.
Solving New England's Urgent Waste and Environmental Issues
Composting addresses several issues we are facing, from landfill closure and greenhouse gas emissions to soils depleted of nutrients from decades of modern agriculture practices.

Landfill Closure Demands Innovative Solutions
With Massachusetts landfills set to close by 2030, and other states soon to follow, waste management costs are skyrocketing. Composting offer a sustainable alternative that transforms challenges into opportunities.

Building a Decentralized Composting Network
We have developed a unique vertical integration model with local compost processing facilities. This approach ensures high-quality compost while supporting regional sustainability.
We control the entire life cycle of the organics we manage, from the curbside bin to the finished bag of compost, implementing and maintaining rigorous quality control protocols.

Closing the loop in our local food system
Our compost directly supports local farms, community gardens, and backyard growers. Through programs like FarmWorks, we're creating a regenerative agricultural ecosystem.
