Compost FAQs

What is your compost made from?

Our compost is produced from food scraps, leaves, and other organic materials collected throughout Massachusetts. It’s fully cured, screened, and meets state quality standards.

Is your compost safe for vegetable gardens?

Yes. It’s safe for food production, raised beds, farms, and home gardens. We test our products for salts, nutrients, heavy metals, soil food web biology, pathogens and PFAS. We also conduct plant trials and test for herbicides, germination and vigor. View Quality and Science results.

How much compost should I use?

For most applications:
Gardens/raised beds: 1–2" mixed into soil
Lawns/topdressing: ¼–½"
Soil restoration: 2–4" depending on site needs

We can help calculate the exact volume for your project. Or try out our online calculator.

How is compost sold?

Bulk compost is sold by the cubic yard in “loose” form, available for pickup or delivery.  Place an order through our Soil Shop.

Can I pick up compost in my own truck or trailer?

If you are a residential customer, you will first need to schedule an appointment and pay in advance for pick up. Please email our team at BulkSales@blackearthcompost.com or use our contact form.

How much material fits in a pick up truck?

Most pickups hold ½–1 cubic yard, depending on bed size and material density.

What should I do if my compost or mulch contains trash, plastic, or foreign material?

While we strive for the highest quality, because our compost is made from residential and commercial food scraps, there is a small chance of minor contamination. Please contact us immediately. We take these issues very seriously and will work to remedy the situation promptly

How do I use a free bag of compost voucher?

If you are a residential food scrap pick-up customer, vouchers can be found by logging into your account. To redeem them at a local garden center, you must print the copy. You may also apply it to a bulk order.

Soil, Leaf Mulch & Other Product FAQs

What soil blends do you offer?

We offer lawn soil, raised bed mix, planting soil, and other custom blends depending on the season.

Are soil bends ready to plant in?

Yes. Our soil blends are engineered to provide nutrients, organic matter, and proper texture right out of the truck.

Can you create custom soil blends?

Yes. For large or ongoing projects, we can quote custom mixes.

What is leaf mulch?

Leaf mulch is shredded, aged leaves. It’s lightweight, improves soil structure, and helps retain moisture. Great for garden beds and pathways.

What is biochar?

Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from organic matter through pyrolysis. It enhances soil fertility, improves water retention, and sequesters carbon, making it a sustainable addition to gardens. Incorporating biochar can lead to healthier plants and increased yields.

Delivery FAQs

Do you deliver compost, soil, and mulch?

Yes. We deliver all bulk materials throughout eastern Massachusetts.

What is the delivery minimum?

Minimums vary by area, but typically 5–10 cubic yards. Smaller loads may be possible with an additional fee.

How far in advance should I schedule?

Peak season (spring): 7-10 days

Off-season: 3-5 days
We’ll always try to fit you in sooner if possible.

Can I request a specific delivery time?

We can offer delivery windows upon request, and drivers can call ahead. Exact times are not guaranteed, but we do our best to accommodate.

Can your trucks access tight driveways?

Our smallest delivery truck is easier to maneuver, but steep grades, overhanging branches, or soft ground can be issues. We need about 8.5 feet of width. Tell us about your site and we’ll plan accordingly.

Can you drive on grass?

We typically avoid grass especially after a wet season or rainy day in order to prevent damage to your lawn or getting our truck stuck.

How much material fits in your delivery trucks?

Our smaller trucks typically fit 8 to 10 yards of compost, soil blend, or mulch.
A Tri-Axle truck can hold up to 20 yards.
A full Tractor Trailer is needed for orders up to 40 yards.
